In February 2013 I went back to Cairo to lead a one-week workshop on sound art called 'The Art of Noise'. It was almost like going back home, when meeting my driver Mohamed at Cairo airport. Many intense memories came back to my mind from my five months residency last year in the big Nile city.

The workshop was curated by Yara Mekawei with financial support from Swiss Arts Council.
All participants did a fantastic job. We spent an incredible creative and warm hearted friendly week together. Thank you so much for this great experience:

My good friend and percussionist Christian Wolfarth invited me to do a remix of one of his 'Acoustic Solo Percussion' 7"s from his volume 1-4 series. Alongside with Rashad Becker, Hans Joachim Irmler (Faust) and Günter Müller, this fine double CD is out now on his own Hiddenbell Records.
One disc contains all original pieces from 'Acoustic Solo Percussion Vol 1-4', the other disc contains the remixes.

Sudden Infant live at 5th anniversary of Zimmer Festival Tel Aviv March 30, 2013

With a slight hangover from the night before at Ausland where I played a turntable solo alongside of Robert Piotrowicz and Ruben Patino, I found myself waiting at the departure gate in Berlin Tegel for my flight to Tel Aviv. It's my second visit to this vibrant and colorful city and the first time to play a full Sudden Infant show in Israel. I'm happy to escape this horrible never-ending winter in Berlin. Tel Aviv welcomes me with 24 degrees celsius!

Despite an Egyptian visa stamp in my passport I easily get through immigration and my friends Guy and Ron are picking me up. On the way to the city we get stopped by Israeli police because I forgot to wear the safety belts on the backseat!

The new Zimmer is way bigger than the old one but still kept his distinctive and unique style, filled with old television sets, tape recorders, turntables, graffitis, found objects, plastic dolls, posters etc.
I immediately feel at home! It's a great place to go and to meet some of the most interesting people in Tel Aviv.

Big thanks to: Ron and Guy for being such great friends and keeping the good work up in Israel, Mia, Alma and Aviad for their lovely hospitality, Nira, Har'El, Gabi, Grisha, Bachmutsky, Marsha, Andrew, Eli, Joe, Assaf, Gali, Ariel, Kabab and all the cool acts I saw at the Zimmer such as Mujahadeen, Laila, Mechonat Hereg, Sachi & the Kids and many more. Despite not being spattered with shit, I enjoyed Extreme Rituals immensely. One Performance, in particular, I thought represented Schimpfluch style at its most true to form and at its most valuable.
Topless, Joke Lanz and Ute Waldhausen slapped and caressed each other with microphones attached to their hands, using feedback and the sounds of their confrontation to craft a fractious, spiky composition. I forget who threw the first punch, but the vigour with which they went at each other, not to mention the toplessness, made this set the weekend's most transgressive in the old school sense. It's power came from the way Lanz and Waldhausen appeared to compress the dynamic contours of a whole relationship, alternately tender and abusive, collaborative and destructive, into their drama. One of the oldest arguments in favour of transgressive art - one cited by Throbbing Gristle and Mike Dando, among others - is that it serves as a tool for the existentialist. By offending you, it makes you aware that you've been conditioned to be offended, and challenges you to take control of your reactions. But graphic depictions of sexual abuse, or Second World War atrocities, have been so common for so long - in the world of harsh noise at least, which is where Schimpfluch fans tend to reside - that they've lost their power to shock and become mere accessories of genre, redundant next to a mainstream culture already saturated by pornography and violence. Lanz and Waldhausen's performance was rare, then, in that it shocked - and shocked into reflection, not disgust.

Extreme Rituals - A Schimpfluch Carnival

A festival of Extreme Music and Performance celebrating the work and legacy of the Schimpfluch-Gruppe art collective:

That incredible weekend of 30th November - 2nd December 2012 at the Arnolfini in Bristol still dominates my mind. Every day I have to think back to this intense experience we all went through, we all shared, we all celebrated! It was a unique feeling of security in extreme actions and passion. In some ways we were one family, one extreme family!

My ER email folder dates back to early 2011 when everything began with an idea and some first contacts to Sound and Music London. Since then almost a thousand emails were exchanged between Steve Underwood (Harbinger Sound), Richard Whitelaw (Sound and Music), Rudolf Eb.er (R&G) and my humble self.

Without Steve, the driving force behind the whole idea, and Richard, the brain who brought all the bits and pieces together, this festival wouldn't have been possible in the way we experienced it. Thanks to the artists who contributed passionate and intense performances and the Arnolfini team who was incredibly supportive, we all witnessed some historical moments in Extreme Music and Performance.

Cycling & Turntablism

After returning to Berlin with a huge Cairo bang in my head I needed some relaxation time and decided to cross the Swiss Alps with my bicycle. It was an unforgettable experience, a masochistic adventure and a great ride at full speed!
